The legacy of the Road Cycling World Championships in Kigali? Rwanda, riding on the wave of the world championship's image success, looks towards 2027, the year when a new race should enter the UCI WorldTour calendar. In an interview with the Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure, the President of the Rwandan Cycling Federation, Samson Ndayishimiye, focuses on the desire to generate a lasting impact, without overshadowing the Tour du Rwanda, the only African 2.1 race that was a fundamental premise for creating the World Championship.
The number one of the RCF clarified: "We must look at the best date and choose the right format, with the idea of finding a higher competition class compared to the Tour du Rwanda (already capable of attracting significant professional teams and World Tour teams, without excluding African national teams, ed)". Ndayishimiye has not set a strict deadline for making a decision, but discussions with the UCI have begun. Looking towards 2027 and within the hoped-for expansion of the African calendar, just as the Continental Championships in Kenya kick off on November 19th.
