A cyclist, a boxer, a rugby player. A cyclist when cycling for women was considered a scandal. A boxer when boxing for women was judged a heresy. A rugby player when rugby for women was thought unnatural and distorted. Yet tenacious and tough, stubborn and contrary, proud and resilient. Above suspicions and rumors, prejudices and preconceptions, even sarcasm and insults. Pioneers and rebels.
The cyclist is Morena Tartagni. From Romagna's Predappio, then from Senago near Milan. The first Italian woman on a world podium: it was 1968, her bronze in the road race was overshadowed by Vittorio Adorni's gold. Later Morena would also win two silver medals, in 1970 and 1971, as well as a world record, Italian titles, victories on road and track. She wrote a book (with Gianluca Alzati), "I Wanted to Be a Cyclist" (Ediciclo), in which she recounts her battles, both on and off the bike.
The boxer is Stefania Bianchini. From Milan, with a degree in Physical Education and Sports Sciences, first karate then kickboxing and finally boxing, the world flyweight title, successfully defended four times before leaving it to another Italian. Today she is a personal trainer. Stefania also wrote a book about her life (with Antonio Voceri), "The Fighter - Self-Portrait of a Woman in the Ring" (Limina), confessing, sharing, and also declaring her strong commitment in the fight against violence towards women.
The rugby player is Isabella Doria. From Milan, she was part of that group of fearless and courageous girls who, in June 1985 in Riccione, played the first match of the Italian national team against France, organized by Uisp, challenging the federal regulations that denied women's rugby and did not authorize these matches. Isabella never gave up. And she made it. So much so that for years she has been a reference point in the movement, a jack-of-all-trades in the Lombardy Committee.
"Not for You" is a double encounter with Morena Tartagni, Stefania Bianchini and Isabella Doria, tomorrow, November 7th, at 8 PM, at the Tilane library in Paderno Dugnano (Milan), and the day after tomorrow, Saturday November 8th, at 9:30 AM, at the Sandro Pertini library in Cinisello Balsamo (Milan), free entry. Pioneers and still rebels. And thanks to them, cycling, boxing and rugby are no longer considered - for women - scandals or heresies, unnatural and distorted.
