"And finally, the time has come for me to enjoy a more peaceful life": with these words, Alberto Rui Costa announced his retirement from competitive cycling. At 39 years old, with the world champion title won in Florence in 2013 and 33 career victories, the Portuguese cyclist has chosen to hang up his bike.
"Cycling has made me very happy, but it's time to retire," wrote the cyclist on Instagram, who made his debut in 2007 with the Benfica jersey before moving to Movistar two years later. He also rode for Lampre Merida, UAE Emirates, Intermarchè Wanty, and finally EF Education Easypost.
His palmares highlights include three stages at the Tour de France, one at the Vuelta, and three consecutive Tour de Suisse titles (2012, 2013, and 2014), as well asthe 2011 Grand Prix of Montreal.
"Now I want to enjoy my family, be present in small and big moments, and finally live a peaceful life, something I often postponed. I managed to realize my dream, I fell and got back up. Today I'm closing a chapter, but my passion for cycling will never end".
