A death that left us with a lump in our throat and too many questions: why? This is the key question that the Vicenza prosecutor's office will try to understand through the autopsy on Kevin Bonaldo's body, requested by the Italian Cycling Federation and ordered by the prosecutor. The death of the 25-year-old from Treviso has too many unclear aspects that need to be investigated. Struck by a health crisis on September 21st during the Piccola Sanremo in Sovizzo, the young man passed away last Friday, and tomorrow morning the autopsy will be performed, which should provide some explanation. Tomorrow afternoon, the funeral will be held at 3:30 PM in the parish church of Ramon di Loria, Bonaldo's hometown. In the coming hours, more information about this seemingly incomprehensible tragedy may emerge. The prosecutor's file currently has no suspects.
Reconstructing the events, Bonaldo was on the last lap of the competition and was trailing behind the lead riders. The 25-year-old, not feeling well, decided to stop and sit on the roadside. Spectators immediately called for help, with the ambulance present at the event intervening within minutes. The young man was still conscious when he went into cardiac arrest. At that point, cardiac massage was performed for 25 minutes, and he began breathing again. He was then urgently admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at San Bortolo in critical condition. During these weeks, he had shown signs that gave hope for his recovery, but then his condition worsened, and Friday morning his heart stopped beating.
Coming from a family that loves cycling, Kevin had started racing as a G1 with the Uc Loria team, then moved to Uc Giorgione, and wore the Vc Bassano jersey, with which he achieved second place in the Italian Team Time Trial Championship among Juniors. He repeated this result among Under 23s in 2021 with Team Qhubeka. Joining the Sc Padovani Polo Cherry Bank this year, after experiences with Zalf Euromobil Désirée Fior and Work Service, he had secured a fifth international place in the fourth stage of the Dookola Mazowsza in Poland.
