Today Arvid de Kleijn was devastating, at the Port Dickson finish line he scored his second victory at the Tour de Langkawi, matching the number of wins from past editions. As soon as he crossed the finish line, his thoughts went to Matteo Malucelli, his main rival who had to leave the race due to a bad crash. The two athletes, who also share the same nickname ("The Gorilla"), respect each other and in recent days have been protagonists of exceptional duels.
"I found out about Malucelli's crash almost immediately, then his teammates came to tell me he had left the race. I am very sorry," de Kleijn said after the finish line, "I enjoyed fighting with him because it was a fair and fun battle. I believe the Tour de Langkawi has lost one of its most important protagonists. I knew it would be a chaotic stage and I'm happy with my victory and that my teammate... took some bonus seconds in the general classification. The sprint was really difficult, I spent a lot of energy to get Blikra's wheel, but I knew it would be the best position. Then once I launched the sprint, I gave everything to finish first."
The Dutch Tudor Team rider had arrived in Malaysia with many doubts and a strong desire to prove himself after the long stop he had to face due to a crash at the beginning of the season. If the first victory was a nice dose of adrenaline, this second success confirms that he not only feels good but is able to make a difference. Yet in recent days his trip was not at all simple; in the third stage he suffered on the climb and then had physical problems that never allowed him to perform at 100%. Today, however, he returned ready to win again and perhaps take home the points jersey, just as he did two years ago. "Finally, I feel good again and now the goal is to keep winning. Tomorrow is a good test, it's a very long stage and I hope to be able to sprint," De Kleijn continued, "Currently, I'm only 3 points behind the points jersey. It's effectively an achievable goal, but I want to focus on victories. I still have two days available, and the sprint classification victory could come as a consequence."
