It is a sad day for the world of cycling: Professor Giovanni Tredici, the "doctor of the Giro", has passed away. He was hospitalized at the Fatebenefratelli Hospital in Milan, he was 81 years old and in recent times had experienced some health issues. Giovanni Tredici was a key reference figure of the highest caliber in medical assistance during races, with his important and charismatic role as head of medical assistance for RCS Sport races, a position he held since 1982.
A person of imposing appearance, yet always elegant, with a consistently gentle demeanor towards everyone, never raising his voice, always available and passionate, in love with bicycles and cyclists, all of them, without distinction, and over the years he practiced cycling "en amateur", not with performance ambitions but as physical exercise, especially in his "buen retiro" in Coarezza, a hamlet of Golasecca, on the Ticino River, just south of Lake Maggiore, with his son Stefano who later followed him on race routes, also as a doctor.
He was a full professor of anatomy, first at the State University of Milan and then at Milan Bicocca University. In his long career as head of medical assistance for the pink races, following Dr. Giuseppe "Pepp" Frattini and Sammarinese Dr. Ceccoli, in 1982, under the Equipe Enervit banner, he took on the responsibility of this important service, selecting his closest collaborators, with Dr. Massimo Branca at the forefront, with whom he collaborated for 43 years.
He was also the author of various scholarly works. In recent years, he mainly followed the service's activities from a logistical, organizational, and strategic perspective.
His son Stefano, an orthopedic traumatologist, has been part of the team for some time, and his daughter Paola, also a doctor, has had some race experience. The third son Francesco, is a lecturer in biomedical sciences.
A long, articulated career, marked by dramatic moments, that the professor carried out on the open car, always with skill, competence, punctuality, and unchanged passion.
To his wife, Mrs. Donatella, to his children and family, the most heartfelt condolences from tuttoBICI and TBW.
