The UCI has confirmed that it will implement a GPS localization system to improve cyclist safety at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, to be held in Kigali, Rwanda, from September 21 to 28.
This initiative is part of the ongoing efforts of UCI and SafeR to improve professional road cyclists' safety. The GPS safety localization technology to be used in Rwanda was tested during the three stages (from August 15 to 17) of the Tour de Romandie Féminin in Switzerland, which allowed its refinement.
All riders in all categories (Men and Women Elite, Under 23 and Junior) will be equipped with a GPS safety localization device attached under the saddle during all 2025 UCI Road World Championships events (road races, individual and team time trials).
This system, managed by the Road World Championships control center, will allow real-time monitoring of position and speed data for the entire group, thus enabling immediate identification of any unusual situations, such as a cyclist's sudden stop on the course. In such a case, the exact location of the rider will be transmitted to interested parties in the convoy – organizers, UCI commissaires, medical and security services – so that appropriate measures can be taken without delay.
The UCI will continue to work closely with event organizers and all stakeholders to further expand GPS tracking for cyclist safety in races and develop safety alert and intervention protocols.
UCI President David Lappartient stated: "The UCI, together with SafeR and in close collaboration with all professional road cycling stakeholders, constantly works to improve cyclist safety. The introduction of a GPS safety localization system for motorcyclists is an important and necessary progress in this direction. Thanks to this system, it will be possible to quickly identify any accident or incident that might have gone unnoticed and to assist the person involved in the shortest possible time by mobilizing those already on the field and emergency services. I want to thank everyone who contributed to the development of this new safety device, as well as the National Federations that will inaugurate it during the 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Kigali".
