The individual time trial of the Vuelta a España concluded with an extraordinary victory by Filippo Ganna, who gave Italy its second consecutive victory after yesterday's win by Giulio Pellizzari.
In the finale, Ganna rode at an average of more than 63 km per hour and beat Vine by less than a second. "At the start, I didn't immediately feel a good rhythm in my legs, it wasn't as I wanted, but in the end I found a good pace and a good rhythm and tried to push as best as possible," Ganna said in the press conference. "Certainly, it was a great suffering to wait three hours on the hot seat, but in the end, I'm really happy to be here celebrating and have this victory in my palmares."
Ganna is not a grand tour rider, and for someone like him, there aren't many opportunities to win at the Vuelta. However, the Piedmontese always managed to maintain concentration and today conquered the Valladolid time trial.
"I think in the end I just try to do my best. In the first week, we tried to give great support to the team and in the second week we tried to recover a bit from my illness at the beginning of this Vuelta. In this last week, I started to feel better and better, and I'm really happy to be here and be able to celebrate this victory."
Filippo Ganna was the big favorite, and when you start with cameras pointed at you, it's never easy to maintain concentration.
"I can say that I went to sleep thinking about what I would do today, and that's probably why I had a strange dream last night, but nothing too crazy."
The Verbania native was also asked how he felt during the race these days in light of the disturbances caused by protesters, which endangered the race's safety.
"Shortening the route to ensure safety, I think, was one of the best solutions. I think the organization did an extraordinary job. There was always a lot of police along the route. I believe it was one of the moments when we truly felt safe."
