While Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale, evolving after a budget increase has announced significant roster changes (with Olav Kooij as one of their key riders, ed.), Victor Lafay has revealed that the French team is not interested in continuing to work with him.
The 29-year-old from Lyon, winner of a stage in both the Giro d'Italia (in 2021) and the Tour de France, risks not being in the peloton next year. Revelation of the 2023 Tour de France, when in Cofidis jersey he conquered the second stage with a splendid action in the last kilometer that allowed him to leave behind none other than Wout Van Aert and Tadej Pogacar, and secure an important contract with Decathlon Ag2r La Mondiale, since then he has been rarely seen, obtaining only one podium at the Classic Var this year, while at the end of last season he finished fourth in the Tour of Guangxi. With just 60 racing days in two years, in 2025 he started with a promising third place in his debut race but then never managed to find his rhythm. Withdrawing from three of the seven races he participated in, most recently the Tour of Britain, he failed to achieve better than a 34th place at Milan – Sanremo.
Slowed by a knee injury that is troubling him more than expected, he is considering the possibility of leaving professional cycling, despite potentially having years of career ahead of him, given his young age. He revealed this today in an interview with Daniel Benson, stating: "I'm not sure if I'll race again next year. I'll make a decision in the coming weeks, but based on what I've achieved so far, if I don't find a place in another team, I would be happy to stop and potentially build a life outside the world of cycling".
