Visma-Lease a Bike decided not to attack yesterday and Jonas Vingegaard simply overtook Almeida in the final meters, managing to gain a few bonus seconds.
The stage was won by UAE Emirates with Marc Soler, while Joao Almeida, who had won yesterday, today had to settle for third place behind the Danish rider.
"Actually, we didn't want to compete for the victory at La Farrapona," Vingegaard said. "We wanted to spare especially Dylan Van Baarle and Wilco Kelderman, because they worked a lot yesterday, so we tried to save them a bit".
In the general classification, there were no major changes and the Danish rider remains in the red jersey, with a 48" advantage over Almeida, 2'38" over Pidcock and 3'10" over Hindley.
"I think our plan went very well yesterday. We have another stage today and then I'll enjoy the rest day. Of course, we still need to stay very focused during the race".
The stage closing the second week of the race will go from Vagadeo to Monforte de Lemos, covering 167.8 kilometers. The start will be challenging with 3,287 kilometers of elevation, concentrated in the first 60 kilometers of the race. "Today there will be a very, very tough start, so we'll need to be present from the beginning and then we'll have the rest day, and hopefully we'll be able to relax".
On Friday, the Danish rider let Almeida win, perhaps not having enough strength to conquer the summit at Angliru. Yesterday, however, his energy seemed to have returned and he easily overtook Almeida in the finale.
"I still feel I have excellent legs: on the Angliru, Joao was very strong and yesterday I was able to beat him in the sprint. I think he was also quite strong yesterday, but I believe the headwind didn't allow him to make a difference. We'll wait to race today and then enjoy the rest day".
