Team Jayco AlUla will participate in the Vuelta a España with the goal of obtaining stage victories and an excellent overall classification, relying on three Grand Tour stage winners, Australians Ben O'Connor and Chris Harper and Irishman Eddie Dunbar.
O'Connor will be the captain of the Australian team after his excellent Vuelta last year: he won the red leader's jersey with a victory in the sixth stage, maintaining the race lead until the final days and finishing second.
In the past year, O'Connor, Harper and Dunbar have delivered three consecutive victories in the queen stages of the grand tours, and the team will aim to continue this streak in 2025: at the 2024 Vuelta, Dunbar obtained two stage victories, including a beautiful one on Picón Blanco. Harper secured his second consecutive queen stage victory with his epic effort at Sestriere on the Colle delle Finestre, and O'Connor completed the trilogy of victories in the most difficult stages of the Grand Tours by winning solo on a brutal day at the Tour de France last month.
Ben O'Connor: "After the Tour, there's always a moment to let go and enjoy the celebrations for winning a stage in the world's most important race. After that, it's back to hard work to prepare for the Vuelta a España. Last year, I had a lot of fun leading the race for two weeks, wearing the red jersey, and it was special to stand on the final podium. I'll return this year with the goal of achieving another great result and experiencing another great moment. The course is generally a bit of a mix with some easier stages, along with climbs that suit me quite well. There are some iconic levels like the Angliru, which I've never done before. We hope to arrive in Madrid and for me to be in the general classification as well".
Veterans Chris Juul Jensen and Koen Bouwman will provide extensive race knowledge with 25 appearances in Grand Tours, while Austrian Patrick Gamper, who was part of two Grand Tour winning teams, including last year's Vuelta winning squad, will be directing the team's engine room.
Completing the aggressive squad will be 24-year-old Anders Foldager and team pursuit Olympic champion Kell O'Brien. Foldager is ready to make his Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta, while O'Brien lines up for the second time in the Spanish race.
Team director Stephen Cummings explains: "We have a strong team for the Vuelta a España with Harper, O'Connor and Dunbar for the climbs. There are many mountain finishes, we aim to win stages and keep O'Connor in contention for the general classification. Foldager has a fast finish and can also make a mark in group sprints, so there are good opportunities for him as well. Bouwman will be present to help in the mountains, while O'Brien, Juul Jensen and Gamper are hybrid riders: they can try to help O'Connor, Harper and Dunbar in the mountains and be present in breakaways and then help Foldager position himself in the finales. I think our team time trial is also very strong and we can't wait to get a good result in that stage".
