From South Africa comes the announcement of another retirement at the end of the season: Ryan Gibbons will conclude his professional career at the end of the 2025 season. At 31, the cyclist born in Johannesburg bids farewell to the peloton after nearly a decade, during which he defended the colors of Dimension Data, UAE Team Emirates and, in the last two seasons, Lidl Trek.
His palmares speaks of ten professional victories, including the general classification at the Tour de Langkawi in 2017, the Trofeo Calvià in 2021 and numerous African and South African championship titles in both road race and time trial. Gibbons has participated in two Olympics and five world championships.
"2025 will be my last season. I have reflected long and hard on this decision and I feel it is time to conclude my career. Cycling has been my passion, it has accompanied me for more than half of my life and allowed me to live a dream, compete in the most important races and meet extraordinary people," Gibbons wrote on social media.
And further: "Being a rider coming from South Africa has involved enormous challenges, from being far from my family and culture to managing residence and visa issues. At this moment, I want to thank my teams, teammates, my family and especially my wife and son. It has been an incredible journey, but now it's time to go home".
