He was the big favorite and did not disappoint expectations: Olav Kooij won the sprint in the opening stage of the 82nd edition of the Tour de Pologne, the Wrocław - Legnica of 199.7 km. The Dutchman from Visma Lease a Bike preceded young French rider Paul Magnier from Soudal Quick Step at the sprint, while Australian Jensen Plowright from Alpecin Deceuninck finished third. The best Italian of the day was Giosuè Epis, who came in seventeenth.
For the twenty-three-year-old Kooij, this is the 42nd victory of his career, the sixth this season.
The stage was animated by the breakaway proposed by Frenchman Donovan Grondin, Dutchman Lars Boven, and Pole Patryk Stoszs, but the sprinters' teams never gave them any space and did not let slip one of the few opportunities that the Tour de Pologne route seems to offer them.
