In Madrid, they didn't miss an opportunity to highlight and celebrate, from a postal perspective, one of the three Grand Tours of cycling, the Vuelta. Born in 1935, this race represents a true social event beyond sports. Placed in the second part of the European season, it showcases the beauty of a territory, the Spanish one, rugged and fascinating, between mountains and plains. This year marks the 90th edition (which will see the first four stages in Piedmont, starting on August 23rd from Turin) for a Tour of Spain that promises to be as always exciting.
The Spanish postal administration (Correos) wanted to underscore this long history of efforts and victories, of cyclists' stories that have written the book of this global sporting event, through a postage stamp, issued on July 31st, which reproduces an emblematic photo of the "group" engaged along a panoramic road that opens to the typical scenario of the Iberian countryside. The 3-euro value has been reproduced in 72,000 copies and is also available in the shop at correos.es. Also available is the "first day cover". From Spain, they emphasize that the Vuelta is not just a sporting event but also a message of inclusion with the "Vuelta Femenina" and the new program "La Vuelta es Más" that promotes cycling as a lifestyle, supporting social causes and giving visibility to Spanish regions as cyclist-friendly destinations.
And so, while the 23 registered teams will be engaged in the hunt for the mythical "red jersey" of the leader, one will be able to remember every moment of this glorious event also with a postal memento that should not be missing in any worldwide cycling enthusiast's collection.
