At the press conference last night in Paris, Jonas Vingegaard appeared relaxed and Van Aert's victory in the final stage of the Tour certainly helped to calm the mood of Visma-Lease a Bike. Before the Tour, the Dane had said he felt good and had arrived at the start in the best condition ever. Last night he wanted to confirm this condition and despite finishing second, he said he will return to the Grande Boucle to win again, but that he would also like to race other events, such as the Giro d'Italia.
His team said Jonas reached his peak performance level in this Tour. Can he confirm this and be satisfied despite finishing second?
"Yes, on some stages this was true, while on others, I was at my lowest level, one I hadn't experienced in many years. So I can confirm that I had days when I was in my best condition ever, but at the same time, I must say I had some negative days as well".
The Tour has always been your main goal in recent years. Could your objectives change in the future?
"I've always said I would like to participate in the Giro d'Italia one day. I'm not saying it will be next year, but we must discuss this with the team. We'll make our plans this winter and see".
Your next objective is the Vuelta a España. What will be your preparation approach and what results do you expect to achieve?
"First, I'll take about a week relatively calm before starting to train again. Actually, it will mainly be about waiting to feel fresh again. Then we'll have only two and a half weeks of training, which doesn't leave much time, but I did this two years ago and it went quite well. When I participated, I finished second behind my teammate Kuss who won. I hope to have a good race this time as well".
The final stage of the Tour de France did not see the Champs-Élysées as the final battle and Montmartre was included instead. Did you like the new route?
"I didn't like it very much, and I had already said so before racing. However, I can say I enjoyed hearing on the radio what was happening while I was struggling on the pavé. I'm happy because our team won with van Aert. It's a victory that did everyone good. Fortunately, the organization decided to neutralize the times at the finish, so those who wanted to race had the opportunity to do so without fear of falling and losing positions or even the jersey".
