A speed reducer with pedestrian crossings on top. On one side a square and small gardens. On the other, two villas overlooking the Dora Baltea valley, separated by a bus stop area. Solid fences divide the two houses from the roadway.
It is here that Samuele Privitera lost his life in an accident whose dynamics are yet to be determined. The Valle d'Aosta Prosecutor's Office has not yet opened a case file (nor has an autopsy been ordered), while the law enforcement officers who intervened for the survey are reviewing an amateur video to understand if it could be useful for the investigation.
A bouquet of flowers has been placed at the accident site. At the foot of the gate, some gel packages. No signs of braking. The group was tackling that stretch of road downhill at a sustained speed, about 70 km per hour and had a gap of over two minutes from the 14 athletes in the breakaway. It is not clear in what position Privitera was, nor is it clear if another athlete involved in the accident was taken to the hospital for checks. There were 32 kilometers left to the finish line in Aosta.
The 61st International Giro of Valle d'Aosta stopped today in mourning. The race will resume tomorrow.
