On one side, Jonas Vingegaard has started the Tour de France with a new spirit, to the point that yesterday he even attempted an attack at the finish and then threw himself into the sprint, securing third place. On the other side, his wife Trine is simultaneously launching an alarm call and an accusation against Visma Lease a Bike.
In an interview with the Danish newspaper Politiken, Trine, who is a mother of two children, pointed her finger at the training methods adopted by the Dutch team.
Trine harshly criticized Team Visma Lease a Bike: "Knowing Jonas as I know him, I would say that the team is pushing him too far. I fear he is biting off more than he can chew. I think that too often people tend to forget the human being behind the athlete and how to get the best out of him. All this could backfire on both him and us as a family".
Mrs. Hansen's statements have inevitably provoked a response from the team: "The training sessions are agreed upon together with Jonas".
But the controversy continues because shortly after, Trine Hansen returned to the topic: "Jonas needs to be with us, at home in Denmark. Three-week high-altitude training camps are not good for him. I know he is very attached to his routine, but sometimes he needs to disconnect. Moreover, Visma sometimes interferes in our private life, like when we decided to renovate part of our house".
It is clear that the controversy is now sliding into personal territory, and we lack the elements to delve into the matter, but it is equally clear that perhaps this was not the right time to start this discussion...
