The Flemish government has officially decided that from 2027, it will no longer support the Flanders Baloise ProTeam project. This will end a long-standing support aimed at developing young Belgian cyclists. This is not a farewell but a shift in objectives: the Flemish government will continue its commitment to track cycling.
The statement issued today clearly explains the reasons for the decision: "The training role of the second-division sports group has been challenged by the new professional cycling model. Young riders are increasingly being recruited directly by WorldTour teams. Moreover, the team cannot compete with the economic conditions offered by these major teams to young talents".
The adventure promoted by the Flemish Sports Ministry began in 1994 with the then Vlaanderen 2002-Eddy Merckx: now the team will have one year to find a new sponsor or redesign its objectives.
