Great success for the Livigno Alè Granfondo, which animated the Livigno Saturday, bringing over 1000 athletes from every corner of the Planet to the roads, despite the last-minute program change. The recent bad weather, in fact, caused the collapse of a retaining wall, which dumped debris, rocks, and mud onto the asphalt along a section of the route. The consequent road closure, imposed by the Prefecture, prevented the race from taking place on the longer route, diverting all participants to the medium track, 106 kilometers with 2050 meters of elevation gain.
A magnificent route, with an extremely high technical level, which started from Aquagranda, the Olympic Preparation Center and Casa Italia headquarters for the 2026 Games, and crossed Livigno's center to reach the Forcola Pass, thus entering Switzerland. From there, cyclists faced the spectacular Bernina Pass, descended through the Engadine, and crossed the Munt La Schera tunnel, then heading towards the final climbs. The race was won by Canadian Jack Burke, in the men's category, in 2 hours, 50 minutes, and 26 seconds, who managed with an impressive progression to detach himself from the group of seven escapees with which he had approached the Eira pass. Among women, a great performance by Laura Simenc, first woman at the finish line, a Slovenian athlete, confirming the competition's important international level.
Particularly impactful were the two breathtaking climbs that concluded the event, with two international cycling giants in quick succession: the Eira Pass and the final passage on Mottolino, which allowed the best to make the difference and revived the emotions of Tadej Pogacar's solo finish during the queen stage of the 2024 Giro d'Italia. Tadej, who also inspired the "Pogacar segment", a race within the race, which rewarded the man and woman who took the least time to complete the stretch from Eira pass to the finish, precisely where the Slovenian champion made the difference last year. The prize, a Pinarello racing bike, was won by Jack Burke and Laura Simenc, the same athletes who won the overall classifications.
A truly special day, with a simply magnificent design, highly appreciated by all athletes at the start, who were struck by the mix of landscape charm and technical difficulties, well described by the words of Zdeněk Štybar, Czech cyclist, multiple world cyclocross medalist, stage winner at Vuelta and Tour, twice second at Paris-Roubaix and winner of Strade Bianche 2015, who commented: "It was a splendid race that took us on iconic roads, capable of making you dream. On one side there is great technical complexity, like in the very tough final section that really hits your legs, on the other the continuous contact with breathtaking nature. That's why Livigno is a capital of European cycling and everyone chooses it to come and train and have fun on two wheels. Plus, for me, it's a special place, I've spent at least three weeks a year here for the last 25 seasons, and it's on the Stelvio that I proposed to my wife to marry me".
Granfondo Livigno Alè 2025 thus closes with great participatory and organizational success, perfectly fitting into the sports tourism proposal of a location linked to cycling in every aspect. The alpine paradise for two-wheel lovers, from simple enthusiasts to the most important champions, who will always find the perfect answer to their needs in Livigno.
Appointment therefore to the Granfondo Livigno Alè next year, on June 27, 2026.
