STAGI'S RATINGS. UAE MAKES ITSELF AT HOME, LIDL TREK STILL HUNGRY, THE FRENCH TEAMS HOWEVER...

DIRECTOR'S RATINGS | 26/05/2025 | 15:05
di Pier Augusto Stagi

LIDL-TREK. 9.5. Appetite comes with eating, and they're devouring almost everything. Voracious and tough, in perfect Mads Pedersen style, they have elevated and monopolized this race like no one else. Six stages, fourteen top-ten placements in fifteen stages, the cyclamen jersey on the flying Dane's shoulders, and now that they've lost Ciccone, their freedom to feast continues...

TEAM VISMA LEASE A BIKE. 8. A waiting race, without being made to wait. Not very inclined to spectacle, they focus on substance, bringing the unnamed Simon Yates behind Del Toro, ready to bullfight with the UAE home boy. Two stage wins with Van Aert and Kooij, eleven overall top-ten placements. The yellow-black hornets buzz silently around the pink nectar, be careful: they sting.

MOVISTAR TEAM. 7. So far they've ridden an intelligent waiting race, launching the excellent Aular who has collected five top-ten placements out of six. The other is an 8th place with Rubio, who is there, in 13th position, 4'26" from the pink jersey. It's not an eternity, just about thirty seconds from the top ten, for this 27-year-old Colombian who can only recover ground on terrains more suitable to him.

INTERMARCHÈ – WANTY. 4. Out of 23 teams at the start, they are in 22nd position. Only one top-ten placement in the first stage with Busatto (4th): they can only do better. Also because doing worse...

Q36.5. 5.5. The first part of this Giro was supposed to be very suitable for their leader, Tom Pidcock, who arrived at the "pink race" with the tank in reserve and the 7 placements obtained by the team are the bare minimum for a formation with a 12 million euro budget.

XDS- ASTANA TEAM. 6.5. One day in pink with Diego Ulissi, the Mediolanum blue jersey of climbers with Fortunato, nine placements collected so far, Shefer's team stands out for continuity and willingness to do, perhaps they would have even deserved something more.

EF EDUCATION – EASYPOST. 8. Richard Carapaz is inspired, so hold on tight. When the Ecuadorian smiles, he freezes blood, when he attacks, he hurts. He's a born fighter and in this Giro he has already won the stage in Castelnovo ne' Monti. While they're at it, they also take the Gorizia stage with Kasper Asgreen. In total 9 placements and more than one reason to say they are among the great protagonists of this Giro that will still see them in the spotlight.

TEAM PICNIC POSTNL. 7. No proclamations, but plenty of substance. One stage win with Van Uden and 7 placements in the bag. The 22-year-old Max Poole is trying to measure himself in a Grand Tour and he too dreams big.

TEAM POLTI VISITMALTA. 6.5. Lots of work, many breakaways, three placements, including a substantial one by Mirco Maestri. Davide Piganzoli is currently 15th in the general classification, with a delay of 5'11". The Valtellina boy, promised to Visma Lease a Bike, has everything to take the ski lifts and enter the restricted circle of those who aspire to be a grand tour rider.

INEOS GRENADIERS. 8.5. Bernal and Arensman are there, with the nobility of this Giro. David Cioni's boys are present in every situation, with a race conduct worthy of their history, their tradition. They are the needle of the balance, also because they have heavyweight men. For the moment ten placements and a win with Turling: but this is just the beginning.

RED BULL - BORA HANSGROHE. 5. Three placements with Roglic, then nothing more. For the red bulls, currently a balance in the red. Only Pellizzari is saved for the great work of assisting the struggling captain. Free the soldier Giulio!

UAE TEAM EMIRATES – EXG. 10. Seven days in the pink jersey with the Mexican boy Isaac Del Toro, third with Ayuso. Eleventh with Mc Nulty, fourteenth with Adam Yates, first in the team classification, monopolizing the young riders' classification and fighting for the blue climbers' jersey. In short, with their 14 top-ten placements and a stage win with Ayuso, they confirm themselves as the number one team in the world, even in a race that is not number one. They honor it with their home boys, making themselves at home.

SOUDAL – QUICK STEP. 6. Right from the start they lose Mikel Landa: stuff that makes you want to walk back from Albania. They decide to continue their journey by bicycle, trying to give meaning to their Giro: 7 top-ten placements, they'll try again.

ISRAEL PREMIER- TECH. 6.5. Derek Gee is 5th in the general classification, after a rather complicated start. Five are also the placements: everyone ready to go the extra mile.

BAHRAIN VICTORIUS. 7. Attentive and responsive like few others. Tiberi restless, but also sliding in the Gorizia stage. Caruso stimulating and performing. The old and the child took each other's hand and went together towards the evening, the pink dust...

COFIDIS. 5.5. Two placements with Oldani and the same with Fretin: not many, indeed, they're quite few. Last week to give battle: but will they have the ammunition?

DECATHLON AG2R LA MONDIALE. 6. Parallel race with Cofidis, almost overlapping: five placements against the four of Damiani's boys. Only positive note: they have Prodhomme in 20th position, almost 9' behind. Monsieurs, it's time to climb.

VF GROUP BARDIANI CSF FAIANÈ. 7. Tough, far from surrendering, they don't make meaningless breakaways, but find a way to enter the breakaways that matter. They race like big teams, with a lightweight squad, but they show and make their weight felt. Seven top-ten placements and leadership with Manuele Tarozzi in the breakaway classification, second in the Red Bull Km classification, behind Del Toro. Well done everyone, especially Fiorelli and Marcellusi.

TEAM JAYCO ALULA. 6. Stage win with Plapp, then many other notable actions. Five placements and the desire to leave a mark again, maybe with Zana? Maybe.

TUDOR PRO CYCLING TEAM. 6. Michael Storer is not far, even if for one reason or another he has lost a lot of precious time. He's 12th in the general classification 4'25" behind Del Toro. Now the stages where they will have to measure up are coming: will he be up to it?

ALPECIN-DECEUNICK. 5.5. They came here to win stages, bomber Kaden Groves conquered one. In total four placements: perhaps a bit too little.

GROUPAMA-FDJ. 4. Two placements: they're thinking about the Tour.

ARKEA B&B HOTELS. 4. One placement, with Luca Mozzato (8th): no one knows what to think.
