Primoz Roglic wants to win this 108th Giro d'Italia and today, in the time trial starting and ending in Tirana, he demonstrated his superiority. For the Slovenian champion, the pink jersey arrived, while the stage victory went to Joshua Tarling, who was just 1" faster than the Slovenian. "I'm happy to be in the pink jersey. Perhaps it wasn't in the plans, it would be better to have it in Rome, but it's still a great result" - Roglic said during the press conference - "I didn't think today's time trial would create big gaps, because it's also a stage that didn't suit me perfectly, but I felt good, I'm happy, I even enjoyed myself after the finish, when I discovered I had won the pink jersey. My gear? Today I had sixty-eight, I always think it's not about gears or shifts but about leg power, and today I had plenty".
The Slovenian won the Giro d'Italia in 2023 when he was racing with Visma. This is his first time in the pink race with Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe, and he wants to win a grand tour with them.
"Clearly there's some disappointment about not winning the stage because you always want to win, but I consoled myself with an excellent final prize. I'm getting older and I'm not focusing on individual results. I'm doing well, I'm even surprised to already have this jersey".
Last year, the Slovenian won his fourth Vuelta. It wasn't an easy feat and there were no shortage of twists. This time, however, he wants to race differently and arrive in Rome in the pink jersey, trying to avoid risks along the route.
"Last year at the Vuelta, a breakaway went away in the early stages, I lost the jersey to O'Connor, certainly there could be breakaways in the coming days, and if so, I hope to lose fewer minutes and take fewer risks compared to last year's Vuelta".
Tomorrow there will be an important stage, the last one in Albania, with a route that could already provide important indications for the general classification. "Tomorrow's stage has a climb I don't know very well, but I think it could become a stage similar to yesterday's. We'll also have to see what pace the Lidl-Trek riders want to impose, because Pedersen is in great form and I think he could be the favorite again tomorrow".
