
Novelties for the 71st Matteotti Trophy, the national elite and under-23 race held in Marcialla, was presented at the "Sassoli" Media Center in Palazzo Pegaso, Via Cavour in Florence. Present were Regional Council President Antonio Mazzeo, the mayors of Barberino Tavarnelle Val di Pesa David Baroncelli and San Casciano Roberto Ciappi, Tuscany Regional Cycling Committee President Luca Menichetti, and Elisabetta Nencini, daughter of Gastone Nencini, the first winner of the "Matteotti" in 1952.
For the organizers, the president of the organizing society Pol. AICS of Florence Gianni Cantini and Armando Nesi, general coordinator of the Marcialla Sports Committee. This year the event will take place on Saturday, May 10th on a different and unanimously considered more challenging route, 158 km long with start at 1:30 PM from Piazza Brandi, which is also the finish line. After the first 10 km, the race will cover a 30 km circuit three times, including the San Donnino climb and passages through Marcialla, then a 57 km section with the "Cipressini" climb from Poggibonsi to Barberino Val d'Elsa, and a final section in the opposite direction from the traditional route. From Tavarnelle Val di Pesa to Bivio Canaglia, descending to Sambuca, Pontenuovo where the climb towards Tavarnelle and Marcialla begins, with the final steep section less than 400 meters from the finish line expected just before 5:30 PM. The Olearia Valpesana Trophy is at stake, won in 2024 by Ligurian Nicolò Garibbo with a strong finish. Currently, about 200 riders from 34 societies are registered, including three foreign teams and almost all the strongest national teams.
