For professional cycling enthusiasts, the beginning of May means only one thing: the first "Grand Tour" of the season, the Giro d'Italia. Friday marks the 108th edition of the event: since its founding in 2017, Bahrain Victorious has achieved notable results in the Giro, winning eight stages in as many participations. Moreover, the team has been on the general classification podium four times, won the points classification in 2023, and the young rider classification 12 months ago, making La Corsa Rosa their most successful race.
In 2024, Antonio Tiberi, in his debut on home roads, conquered the white jersey for the best young rider. The twenty-three-year-old from Lazio maintained the jersey from the eleventh stage to Rome with a mix of tenacity and audacity, and Tiberi will lead Bahrain in the next three weeks.
As in the previous year, Gorazd Štagelj is the main Sports Director and has very clear ideas about the team's objective: "We have a clear goal: to focus on Antonio for the general classification, to try to climb onto the podium. He is the team's only leader and, if everything goes as we have planned, then yes, we will focus completely on this. The biggest challenge for Antonio, let's say, are the two time trials, where we want to gain time. Then we have the final days, especially stages 19 and 20, where we expect the biggest battle. He will probably be mainly on his own, against the other riders in the general classification, to demonstrate his qualities."
Tiberi himself does not seem to feel the weight of responsibility on his young shoulders and is enthusiastic about starting his home Grand Tour for the second time: "I am really, really happy to participate again in the Giro d'Italia and I can't wait to start. In these days I have worked really well and the legs seem to be in good shape, so let's go! Damiano Caruso and I work well together, so let's see how the sensations will be in the race. I can't wait to start and try to give my best."
Alongside Tiberi, his lieutenant Damiano Caruso, then the other Italians Andrea Pasqualon and Edoardo Zambanini, the Spaniard Pello Bilbao, the Portuguese Afonso Eulalio, the Croatian Fran Miholjevic and the Slovenian Mateuz Govekar.
