
Tragedy struck at the BGY International Gran Fondo in Bergamo. A 31-year-old cycling enthusiast, Michele Negri, from Sant'Angelo Lodigiano and resident in Cavenago d'Adda, crashed into a wall in a curve at Berbenno and died instantly.
The accident occurred around 10:30 AM on Papa Giovanni XXIII Street near the parish church during the 27th edition of the Gran Fondo. An emergency helicopter was dispatched for the young man, but there was nothing that could be done to save him.
Born on May 17, 1993, Negri was registered as a Master 1 amateur cyclist for the MP Filtri Team, based in Santa Croce Street in Milan.
ORGANIZERS' CONDOLENCES. The BGY Airport Granfondo Organizing Committee announced that a tragic event occurred during the event. Around 11:00 AM, near the junction leading to Berbenno, a 31-year-old participant unfortunately lost his life due to a fall.
With profound sorrow, the BGY Airport Granfondo organization extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends.
At the finish line, event organizer Giuseppe Manenti of G.M.S. addressed the public with these words of grief: "Some news you never want to deliver. Today, a young man lost his life in a tragic fall. The Organizing Committee asks everyone present to offer a thought of condolence and comfort to the family and team".
