The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is pleased to announce that Vittoria Bussi (BJ Bike Club ASD) will attempt to break the UCI Hour Record presented by Tissot on 9 May at the Velodromo Bicentenario in Aguascalientes, Mexico.
The Italian already holds the women’s record for the greatest distance ridden in one hour, becoming the first woman to break the 50km barrier when she covered 50.267 kilometres on 13 October 2023, also in Aguascalientes. She had previously held the record for three years – from September 2018 to September 2021 – with a distance of 48,007 kilometres.
The 38-year-old mathematician is a former middle-distance track runner, who took up cycling at the age of 27. As a cyclist, she has podiumed several times in the individual time trial at the Italian National Championships, and was part of the Italian team that took the bronze medal in the team time trial mixed relay at the 2020 UEC European Championships. The following year, she won the opening time trial of the Czech stage race Tour de Feminin – O cenu Českého Švýcarska.
Following her attempt on the UCI Hour Record presented by Tissot, Vittoria Bussi will remain in Aguascalientes to attack another world record: that of the women’s 4km individual pursuit. Great Britain’s Anna Morris holds the current record of 4:24.060 which she set at the Lloyds National Track Championships in Manchester, Great Britain, on 22 February 2025. The record has been lowered several times since the introduction of the new individual pursuit distance for women – increased from 3km to 4km – on 1st January this year.
Vittoria Bussi said: “I am over the moon thinking that I will have the chance to attempt to break the UCI Hour Record presented by Tissot again in my life. I can say that I started my real cycling career with this record, so it will be the perfect dream to finish it with another record.
“To me, this record has meant much more than just a sport performance, it actually helped me in the darkest period of my life, so I am deeply and sincerely thankful to all the people who supported me during all these years, as an athlete but most of all as a person.
“It will be the most challenging Hour of my career as it has been prepared together with the individual pursuit, my other (very different!) love. I think it would be a beautiful historical moment for women’s cycling to be able to hold both the records at the same time, so I am honored to try!”
