From tomorrow to next Sunday, the Polti VisitMalta Team will be competing at the eastern borders of Europe, in an 8-day competition officially called the Presidential Cycling Tour of Türkiye: the overall winner will secure the turquoise jersey (a color chosen to recall the country's name) with additional jerseys for points classification, mountain points, and intermediate sprints.
Group sprints are expected at the beginning and end of the race, with the queen stage being the fourth, ending with a 9 km climb at 10% towards Kiran. The sixth stage will feature an explosive uphill finish, while other stages are anticipated to have varied conclusions depending on the balance of power between breakaway riders and fast wheels. Polti VisitMalta arrives with two climbers Fernando Tercero and German Gomez, sprinters Giovanni Lonardi and Manuel Peñalver, and team leaders Mirco Maestri and Diego Sevilla supported by Pablo Garcia.
Peñalver: "I really like the Tour of Turkey, there are many opportunities for sprinters, but we'll also aim for classification with Tercero and Gomez. We'll give our all to bring home a good points haul!"
Sports Director Giovanni Ellena: "This is the last race before the Giro d'Italia and it's where Lonardi secured our team's last victory last year. A fully deserved success, though it came through the disqualification of a rival who had committed an irregularity in the sprint. This time, our goal is to win by raising our arms first."
