Alfredo Binda is one of the most important figures in Italian and European cycling history. A formidable athlete, Team Coach, and enlightened Manager. Dozens of books and articles have been written about him. Numerous reviews, exhibitions, commemorations, and celebrations have been organized for various occasions. One in particular, which we remember well, was the Binda Day on October 26, 2002, at Villa Ponti, where, thanks to an extraordinary sense of unity, the entire cycling world gathered around all the living World Champions. From Darrigade to Saronni and from Merckx to Baldini, they came together in Varese to honor the memory of someone who had made the glorious world champion jersey almost like a second skin.
On April 26 and 27 in his hometown of Cittiglio, his unforgettable figure will be commemorated once again, thanks to the Municipality and the Nova Unione Velocipedistica Italiana. The unique aspect of the event will focus on his first Giro d'Italia (1925), which he rode as a newcomer and won in the presence of "old cycling foxes" like Girardengo, Brunero, and Belloni. It marks the centenary of his first great achievement, and the association of passionate cyclists has decided to involve his daughter Lauretta and a group of collectors and enthusiasts of "beautiful cycling" to discuss that magical May of 1925 when the outsider Alfredo Binda set out for the Gazzetta race, part of the Legnano team under DS Pavesi, who had strongly wanted him in the squad. It will be an event focused on his first year of activity in Italy after making a name for himself on the ups and downs of the French Riviera.
The two-day program includes a Saturday exhibition in the Council Hall featuring extremely rare and never-before-seen paper materials, all related to the 1925 Giro, jerseys and bicycles from the period, including the special "La Francaise-Diamant" from 1924 that Binda rode in Nice. The Museum will also be open for an extraordinary visit. At 3 PM, to the sound of the band, in strictly period attire, a procession will begin towards the cemetery grounds where a wreath will be laid. Later in the afternoon, we'll witness a cultural moment to delve deeper than ever into that magical 1925 Giro d'Italia.
For Sunday morning, a period-style bike ride is planned on Binda's roads, passing through Brenna, Cuvio, Brinzio, and Gavirate, while in the afternoon, the most daring will tackle, exclusively wheel-to-wheel, the formidable Cuvignone, the quintessential Binda climb.
