TOUR DOWN UNDER. DOUBLE STRIKE FOR NARVAEZ AT WILLUNGA HILL: STAGE AND JERSEY
PROFESSIONALS | 25/01/2025 | 05:45 di Carlo Malvestio In the queen stage of the Tour Down Under 2025, Jhonatan Narvaez celebrates, making his first mark with the new UAE Team Emirates-XRG jersey. The Ecuadorian conquered the iconic Willunga Hill finish, sprinting ahead of Oscar Onley (Team Picnic PostNL), last year's winner, Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla), and the general classification leader Javier Romo (Movistar). Thanks to the gap created in the final meters and time bonuses, Narvaez managed to snatch the ochre jersey from the Spaniard's shoulders, effectively securing the overall victory given the simple concluding stage tomorrow on the roads of Adelaide. The stage was animated in the early phases by the breakaway of the Spanish duo Juanpe Lopez (Lidl Trek) and Pablo Torres (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), and then by Michael Hepburn (Jayco AlUla), Pascal Eenkhorn (Soudal Quick-Step), Ben Swift (Ineos Grenadiers), and Oliver Bleddyn (Australia). Caught 25 km from the finish, on the first passage of Willunga Hill, Mauro Schmid and Chris Harper (Jayco AlUla) tried a move in pair, but the race was naturally decided by the final 3.3 km at 7.7% climb to Willunga Hill. Somewhat surprisingly, the general classification leader Romo was the first to attack, just as the final climb began. The winner of Uraidla rejected Harper's attempt to stay on his wheel and remained alone in the lead until 700 meters from the finish, when from behind, thanks especially to Luke Plapp's forcing, Narvaez, Onley, and Plapp himself rejoined. The 4 thus arrived to contest the sprint, while Finn Fisher-Black attempted a desperate comeback from behind. Narvaez made his quick sprint count, beating Onley and the approaching Fisher-Black.
