He let his opponents exhaust themselves on the final climb of the day and then made his winning move four kilometers from the Uraidla finish line. Javier Romo, 26-year-old from Movistar, thus conquered the victory in the third stage of the Tour Down Under at the conclusion of 147 exciting kilometers.

The Spanish athlete obtained his first career win and also the leadership in the general classification of the race, beating the chasing group by 5" in a sprint won by Jhonatan Narváez, Ecuadorian from UAE Team Emirates - XRG, and Finn Fisher-Black from Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe completing the podium.Andrea Bagioli finished well in seventh place.

THE RACE REPORT - At the second kilometer of the race, Belgian Dries De Pooter (Intermarché – Wanty) broke away, followed by Frenchman Geoffrey Bouchard (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) and joined within a few kilometers by the duo of British Connor Swift (INEOS Grenadiers) and climbing leader Fergus Browning (Australian National Team): this first attempt of the day was quickly neutralized, and further attacks followed. Approaching the Ashton KOM, Connor Swift and Fergus Browning emerged from the group again, with the 21-year-old Australian anticipating the INEOS Grenadiers athlete at the top of the climb. The situation at the head of the race changed again when Swift decided to detach himself from the breakaway and wait for the group, from which Frenchman Geoffrey Bouchard was emerging once more.

Around the fortieth kilometer of the race, the duo of Browning and Bouchard formed, leading the stage for a long time and gaining over two minutes on the peloton. In the first climb of Knotts Hill (KOM won by Browning), the group reduced the gap to the attackers while the sprinters, including general classification leader Sam Welsford, were reported to be struggling.

At the first passage through the finish line, the escapees had about fifty seconds advantage, Bouchard crossed first winning the intermediate sprint, but shortly after, with 25 kilometers to go, the group decreed the end of the day's breakaway, forcing first the Australian and then the Frenchman back into the ranks. Following the most classic of scripts, in the approach to the second climb of Knotts Hill, the group traveled fast with various teams working to secure the best positions for their leaders. After the effective work of INEOS Grenadiers, Michał Kwiatkowski broke the deadlock by attacking 7 kilometers from the finish but was stopped by Rémy Rochas from Groupama – FDJ. At that point, young Portuguese rider Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain – Victorious) gained courage, trying to increase the pace but was also caught. Rémy Rochas attacked again, winning the Knotts Hill KOM, but the decisive move was made moments later by Javier Romo, forcing his opponents to chase him to the finish line.

The athlete from Toledo thus returns to the hotel with the "ochre" leader's jersey and will be at the front of the start in Glenelg tomorrow; with him will also be the classification leaders: Albert Withen Philipsen, fourth today and best young rider; Fergus Browning, increasingly the climbing leader, and Sam Welsford, first in the points classification.

Martin Lopez will not be at the start tomorrow: the XDS Astana Team athlete crashed heavily about fifteen kilometers from the finish line and did not complete the stage. The team communicated that he was transported to the hospital for appropriate checks on his condition. THE WINNER'S WORDS. "I worked hard to prepare for this Tour Down Under, but I never thought I would win today. I only began to understand I could do it after the red triangle. The final attack was not planned, I felt I had good legs and I tried: it was perfect. This victory is important for me, but also for my family and all those close to me. Now the goal is to maintain the leader's jersey, it won't be easy, but I will certainly try." FINAL STANDINGS [Entire final standings and general classification as in the original document]
