AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. JAYCO ALULA SPECTACULAR: DURBRIDGE WINS AFTER A RIVER BREAKAWAY, PLAPP IS SECOND

Luke Durbridge conquers the title after an incredibly long breakaway, anticipating his teammate (and outgoing champion) Luke Plapp who reached and helped him in the final kilometers of the race. In third place, with a 58" gap, Liam Walsh (Ccache X Bodywrap) finished.
It is Luke Durbridge himself, born in Greenmount (about 20 km from Perth), who launches the first attack of the day together with Conor Leahy shortly after the start. The leading pair gains an important advantage over the peloton and, with about eighty kilometers to go, the 33-year-old Jayco AlUla cyclist increases the pace, dropping the Ccache X Bodywrap rider and continuing the action solo.
With 25 kilometers to go, Durbridge is reported with still 1'10" advantage over a group of chasers including Jai Hindley (Red Bull - BORA – hansgrohe), Jay Vine (UAE Team Emirates – XRG), Blake Agnoletto (Atom 6 - Decca Continental Team), Brady Gilmore (Israel Premier Tech Academy), Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla) and Chris Harper (Team Jayco AlUla). At the sound of the bell, Luke Plapp emerged from the chasing group in full battle.
The outgoing Australian champion who reached his teammate, forming the Jayco AlUla tandem and effectively supporting the beautiful action by setting the pace in the final kilometers. In the last meters of the race, Plapp placed his hand on his teammate's back, leaving him the scene and rejoicing in the victory.
The team of General Manager Brent Copeland thus doubles the success obtained at the beginning of the day by the young Lucinda Stewart. An unfortunate race, however, for Sam Welsford of Red Bull - BORA – hansgrohe. The new Australian Criterium champion fell in the first part of the race, then getting back on the bike with evident abrasions to his lower limbs.
