THE PARADOX. THE ROAD TO WORLDTOUR... DOES NOT GO THROUGH WORLDTOUR

The road that leads to WorldTour does not go through WorldTour. This is one of the paradoxes of modern cycling and a (three-year) system of promotions and relegations that guarantees more to those who are relegated compared to those who are saved or promoted.
Never as in the 2023-2025 three-year period has it been seen how the teams relegated at the end of 2022 (Lotto and Israel) have enjoyed great advantages compared to those who remained in the WorldTour or climbed into it. And in this 2025 we will have an additional exceptional demonstration that - clearly - shows how the system needs to be at least improved.
The emblematic case is precisely that of Lotto, the Belgian team that closed the 2024 season in ninth place in the world ranking with 12,579.29 points and an advantage of almost 4,000 points over the team occupying the 19th position in the ranking, Arkea B&B Hotels, stopped at 8,735
Well, Lotto's manager, Stephane Heulot, was clear: "Our goal for 2026 is to return to the WorldTour, we want to confirm ourselves in the world top ten as has been happening for two years now and maintain the advantage we have over our direct competitors. That's exactly why we made some choices in the calendar...".
And Lotto's choice could not be clearer: renouncing the right (not the obligation!) to take part in many WorldTour races such as Santos Tour Down Under, Paris-Nice, Tirreno-Adriatico, Itzulia Basque Country, Giro d'Italia and Criterium du Dauphiné.
Six "no" to WorldTour races only in the first half of the season: the explanation is simple, better to focus on one-day races - classics apart - of 1.PS and 1.1 categories that guarantee more points.
An example? Winning a stage of the Giro d'Italia yields 180 points, a stage of the other stage races mentioned is worth 60. On the contrary, winning a 1.PS race allows you to earn 200 points, winning a 1.1 category race (in which, inevitably, the level of competitors is lowered) brings 125 points.
This is why Lotto, in a completely legitimate way, made these choices. And to a lesser extent, it will be imitated by Israel (which occupies the 11th place in the world ranking with 11,723,33) given the announced withdrawal from Paris-Nice.
Where's the problem? In the fact that Arkea, Cofidis and Astana - all three WorldTour teams but at the end of 2024 stopped at 19th, 20th and 21st positions - cannot make the same choice, but are obliged to compete in all WorldTour races. It's as if in football there was a single ranking for teams that always and only face Manchester and Real Madrid and for others that instead - with all due respect - choose to measure themselves against Mantova and Frosinone. It's true that the ball, like wheels, is round, but the balance of probabilities clearly leans to one side.
And there's really something that doesn't work if a team gives up competing in many races of a category to earn the right, from next year, to belong to that same category...

D'accordo con Bullet. Le italiane ben difficilmente avrebbero potuto fare il Giro negli ultimi anni, oltre alla Lotto anche la Totalenergies avrebbe avuto diritto, in base ai punti. E sara' cosi' anche quest'anno.

Grazie a questo paradosso ancora abbiamo in "serie B" 3 squadre. Se non ci fosse questa possibilità probabilmente il ciclismo in Italia sprofonderebbe ancora di più a livello agonistico mondiale; inoltre con questo paradosso acquistano importanza corse minori.

Ormai questo sistema è una barzelletta che non fa più ridere nessuno. Due categorie e due finti campionati mischiati con diritti doveri e budget totalmente sfasati. Gare che si sovrappongono e squadre che si sovrappongono. Resteremo in attesa lungo il fiume, per veder passare il cadavere.

Premetto che non piace neanche a me questo sistema ma non si può parlare di paradosso... È stato fatto un paragone con il calcio, e beh, lil calcio mi pare funzioni allo stesso modo visto che chi a fine anno retrocede in serie b ha giocato contro squadre di serie a e chi viene promosso in seria lo ha fatto giocato un anno intero contro squadre di serie b
