MEALTIME. FAUSTO, MARCO AND THAT COLD INSIDE

"The last words of Marco Pantani, the Pirate: 'They wanted to hit only me'. The last words of Fausto Coppi, the Champion of Champions: 'Tavern, how cold it is'." Giorgio Bocca wrote a piece about the "fragility of demigods" upon Pantani's death ("la Repubblica", February 17, 2004, also in the book "The Word Partisan" edited by Piero Colaprico for "la biblioteca di Repubblica-l'Espresso"), highlighting similarities and differences with Coppi, "the first for his drug sin, the second for the malaria killing him, both for the mortal fragility of demigods, which pleases ordinary men as much as, if not more than, their victories.
Both grumpy heroes who do not confide, who remain silent, who hide what is inside them."
Physically: "Ugly but deeply loved. Coppi with a protruding chest like a migratory bird, extremely long legs, skinny like a gypsy, Pantani short and bald, but who on great days transform, become beautiful, rise up, barely touch the road's asphalt, realize everyone's dream, flying, climbing effortlessly, exempt from gravity, from fatigue."
Psychologically: "The two, passionate and grumpy, surrender to the relationship with the crowd of magical expectation, they need its total love, she needs that superhuman power that can be unleashed but no one knows how and when."
Cycling-wise: "Every race a mystery, every sporting adventure a mix of expectations and anxieties, dull days followed by unforgettable luminous ones, victories in the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, impossible feats, superhuman efforts that one indeed dies from but the crowd would never want to end, the passion for the demigod slowly consuming, the hope of seeing him rise again lasting for years."
Bocca, from Piedmont like Coppi, a year younger, recalls the final act: "At the deathbed of the dying Coppi, his legitimate wife Bruna and de facto wife Giulia alternate in a complicated scheduling game. At the funeral, it will be a ballet of moved and replaced wreaths, of posters claiming widowhoods. The lover Giulia made a black dress for the funeral, but when she appears, people murmur: 'The white lady, the white lady', the fairy-tale name given to her by the newspapers. Only a few journalists will rush to call her 'the black widow'."
But it is the relationship with the people that strikes Bocca and elevates Coppi to immortal: "The crowd takes over Coppi's funeral in Castellania, and for relatives who would want reserved, modest funeral rites, Livio Coppi, the older brother, recalls: 'Fausto belongs to the crowd, we cannot prevent the crowd from paying him their last tribute'. And so it happens, an immense crowd forms a wing around the coffin for twenty kilometers." Nobody, neither Giorgio Bocca nor Livio Coppi, would have ever imagined that 65 years later the crowd would reclaim their Fausto. In Castellania. That little church, those hills, that cold that enters your bones. Even tomorrow.
