A sad smile, a veil of melancholy. An almost surrender to the overwhelming power of those who play against the clock with disarming ease. The emblematic image of Filippo Ganna's 2024 is entirely captured on the podium set up under the pouring rain in Paris, with Remco Evenepoel raising his arms and the Italian trying to stretch his lips to make the silver medal, the first for the Italian delegation at the Olympic Games, less bitter.
Ganna's was a particular year, in which perhaps the five-ring goal consumed his body and soul, influencing the first part of the season and then amplifying the emotions in a finale made even more complicated by physical problems. The show of strength on the roads of Desenzano, with the national jersey on his shoulders, gave the real perception of the Piedmontese's emotional state: "It had been a while since I hadn't won (256 days) and doing it here, just a few meters from a velodrome I know well, and in Italy, in front of our audience and beating a champion like Tadej, means double for me", he declared in tears, a sign of a burden already quite heavy before leaving.
Perhaps too large, the boulder that if carved incorrectly always risks turning into an obsession for victory, probably the maximum limit when facing an Olympics. A brake, or a skid - like the one that almost unseated the Italian on the slippery Parisian curves - certainly some meters enclosed in those 14"92 of difference from the Belgian: "I believed until the end, from the beginning of the season the goal was the gold medal but only a silver arrived. It burns because I'm not someone who settles", he reiterated just after stepping down from the podium. Quite direct words, difficult to digest after a near-perfect performance nullified by King Remco.
In addition to the emotional weight, the technical aspect with the double preparation Ganna was involved in must also be highlighted: on one side the 30 individual kilometers on the road, on the other the 4 on the track (the tests were interrupted by a return to Italy, another factor not to be underestimated), two different preparations, in terms of effort and management, which probably influenced the overall performance. But assumptions aside, beyond the Parisian watershed, Ganna brought home two silver medals - the second at the Zurich World Championships - and a bronze in the team pursuit (also in Paris). Phenomenal numbers, signals for the future: the Parisian race could have been the last five-ring race of his career - even if he'll be 32 in Los Angeles -, in the new year Ganna will dedicate himself to the road: "I will no longer participate in World Championships and World Cup but I won't completely abandon the track, it's useful for those load volumes I can't maintain on the road - he said in recent weeks to Adnkronos microphones. - The first goal remains to win. As much as possible". Two major objectives: first the Milan-Sanremo, then the Paris-Roubaix, two complicated classics for what they represent (not just historically). In between, the Tour and probably the World Championships in Rwanda. Perhaps with a different spirit, with less pressing pressure, but with the same desire of someone who is never satisfied.

Un tempo erano le squadre italiche che prendevano i campioni esteri per fare I gregari ai campioni italiani; oggi e il contrario Ganna fa il gregario e nei ritagli di tempo si prende qualche soddisfazione; in parole povere e' il Knut Knudsen dei tempi moderni: opinione personale.
