GPO, THE IMMENSE. REMEMBERING MARCO PASTONESI

Curious and scholarly, adventurous and enterprising, encyclopedic and verbose, provocative and intrusive, literarily omnivorous and journalistically bulimic, egocentric yet simple and generous, never heard complaining or grumbling, infinite yet also finite, finished today with breathing, living, quoting, writing. Him, GPO.
GPO. All uppercase. Gian Paolo Ormezzano was uppercase, totally uppercase. He was a typewriter, a human writing machine. Eighty-nine years old, of which seventy (he - shyness was never his strong suit - would even attribute an eighty) writing, thus a street-side man, a street reporter, a stadium and arena correspondent, from track and velodrome, suitcase under the pillow, passport in his pocket, typewriter built-in. A sports journalist, from the podium, on the podium, by number of Olympics (25 between summer and winter), World and European Championships (football, athletics, swimming, skiing, "even ping pong"), Giro d'Italia (28 "behind the cyclists") and Tour de France (15), championships, tournaments, matches, encounters and interviews, appointments and compositions, ideas and projects, thousands of pieces, pieces of history, and not just sports history, pieces of Italian life, and not just his own. The first target of his jokes - he was a heavyweight who hit frantically like a fly - was himself, "terribly and fiercely sincere", capable of even describing his double pneumonia at 85 years old, his hearing weakness, his alimentary voracity, his feats, including two marathons, "42 km of running, finished like a fakir without training, in New York and Turin, at 60 and 65 years old". Enormous GPO.
GPO in journalism was a chronicler, editor, headline writer, correspondent, director; print, radio, TV; scholar, passionate, historian; colorist, columnist. And to that runner (Alcide Cerato, later a funeral services specialist, and thus called the "Bartender") who asked him what he could do "to avoid saying, when someone asks me what my job is, that I'm an undertaker", he suggested inventing himself as editor of a magazine dedicated to death. Title: "La Buona Sera" ("My great beautiful title", GPO boasted). Director: GPO (who defined the magazine as "of life, death, and miracles"). Gigantic GPO.
GPO who said he wrote "because I like it" and "I know nothing else to do", who admitted to "having lost all my patrimony in Argentine bonds" and who since then wrote "for money", who confided how "travel journalism swallowed me", who compared himself to Trilussa's butterfly when confessing "I'm modest and I'm proud of it", who dismissed himself, premising "patience if this is now a semi-funeral eulogy", and then concluding "it was beautiful, thanks for everything to everyone". GPO who explained he had "seen the world for free", who specified "not only covered in primary needs (food lodging washing ironing, as Totò would say) and financed to travel (plane train ship car, even the scooter I adored), but also salaried, with pension and severance pay". This meant spending "half of every year away from home". Immense GPO.
GPO was the one who ended phone calls to friends exclaiming "long live us". This time he deserves the singular. Long live him, long live GPO. And thank you.
