MATTIA CATTANEO: "CYCLING HAS CHANGED. QUIT? NOT A CHANCE"

Thirty-four years old last October 25th, Mattia Cattaneo from Alzano Lombardo (transplanted to Switzerland for a few years but still maintaining a strong connection with his Bergamo roots), is experiencing the best seasons of his professional career. The Soudal Quick-Step rider has closed a 2024 full of satisfaction. "Certainly for me it has been a very positive season, I've achieved many good results despite starting to become a bit of an old-timer (and laughs...), hopefully we can continue like this in the near future". Regarding the immediate future, this is the time when we start planning the next season. Besides time trials where you are now a established protagonist, are there any races where you would like to emerge? "I believe the best wish I can make for myself is to continue to remain at the level I've reached. For me, staying at this level would already mean a lot. In terms of objectives, my role is increasingly one of supporting the team leaders, so it depends a lot on their race schedule, and then I'll certainly try to seize any personal opportunities in time trials and in any occasions that may arise". You recently became a father (in early October, your wife Erika gave birth to Camilla), has life changed? "Certainly. Many things change, but everything changes for the better despite it being a bit more challenging to face everyday life. It was a step that needed to be taken, it's the right age, so I'm very happy about this in my 2024 as well". Recently you were at the awards ceremony of the Bergamo Provincial Committee of the Cycling Federation where the youngest athletes in the Giovanissimi category were the happiest and most energetic as always. What message do you feel you can give to this category, you who are a beautiful example of athletic longevity? "Competition must be part of youth cycling, but above all what matters is enjoyment. I always say that up to the Allievi category it should be primarily about fun. And I say this even though cycling is now going in a direction opposite to my thinking. To these boys and girls in the Giovanissimi category, I wish for them all to become professionals, but above all to become great men and have fun with their friends and teammates". How are you experiencing the changing world of cycling? "The world is moving faster than before, and the world of professional cycling has undergone many changes, especially with incredibly strong riders emerging from the youth categories right from the start. It's a process that is somewhat inevitable to reverse now, I believe the best thing is to continue to believe that cycling is still somewhat like it used to be, despite these changes. However, cycling is heading in a direction where the rider must be immediately strong and not develop over many years, as was the case in the past where young riders were allowed to grow slowly". Different ways of understanding sport, in this case cycling, but at the same time it remains undeniable that it is the person who makes the difference, not countless technologies that help one emerge. The competitive life of Mattia Cattaneo from Alzano Lombardo has been a path paved with successes and dreams in the youth categories, but also paved with a series of misfortunes since he turned professional twelve years ago. In the end, however, the character of the boy who never gave up came through, he grew up, became a man, and is now taking those satisfactions that adverse destiny seemed to want to deny him. This is the greatest lesson that cycling, sports in general, can give to young people.

Uno va forte subito, va forte prima, perché ha i numeri. Inutile girarci tanto intorno. Il discorso di aspettare per dar modo di crescere non ha senso. Se hai la stoffa ti imponi da subito, vinci da subito. Al primo anno di professionismo Gimondi ha vinto il Tour de France (non il circuito di Casei Gerola), Merckx ha impiegato poco per manifestarsi campione, Coppi al secondo anno di professionismo ha vinto il Giro. Baronchelli al primo anno di professionismo è arrivato 2° al Giro.
