Chased, controlled, and invited to follow them pedaling to the first Carabinieri Headquarters in Gravedona (Como), both Diego Ulissi and Domenico Pozzovivo. Both taken to the Headquarters for verification. The reason? They were riding side by side. This all happened last Sunday on that stretch of Lake Como that turns Northwest, near Colico. "They followed us for a while, as if they were escorting us," recounts Domenico Pozzovivo to tuttobiciweb, who will become a father in a few weeks. "They wanted to verify that I stayed on the left side of the road, and once they confirmed I was proceeding steadily, they signaled us to follow them to the first Carabinieri Headquarters." The one fined? Only Domenico, who was indeed on the left: a fine of 18.50 euros for him. "The problem isn't the fine, but as I explained to the Carabinieri, cyclists are too often brushed by cars, and for this reason, I prefer to always ride side by side with my companion (in this case Diego Ulissi) to increase my visibility, my visible 'mass'. I've already been hit multiple times, and as long as I ride a bicycle, I'll always ride two abreast. This law needs to be changed, as they do in Great Britain and elsewhere, where it's legally permitted to ride side by side. I prefer to pay the fine than risk being under a car again."
