Another heart-pounding day at the Tour De Langkawi. The final stage of the Malaysian race concluded in front of the Petronas Towers, which witnessed the beautiful victory of Aaron Gates. The New Zealander from the XDS Astana team attacked together with Aivaras Mikutis (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) in the final kilometers, catching Nik Gimeno, the last survivor of the breakaway. Joris Delbove won the overall classification.
THE RACE. The final stage of the 2025 Tour de Langkawi from Tangkak opened with a truly emotional moment, as the peloton paid tribute to Alexander Kristoff, who today officially ended his professional athlete career.
After about thirty kilometers, the day's breakaway formed with 4 athletes who managed to accumulate up to 4'20" advantage over the peloton: Oliver Peace (Team Picnic PostNL), Marc Brustenga and Nil Gimeno (Equipo Kern Pharma) and Robert Carlos Gonzales (Team Solution Tech Vini fantini). On the penultimate climb of the day, the Bukit Hantu climb, positioned 26 km from the finish, the group of escapees completely exploded while the peloton continued to lose riders.
The race came alive in the final 20 km, with several athletes attempting to break away. Spanish rider Nil Gimeno remained at the front, trying to resist the advancing peloton. Taking advantage of the leader Joris Delbove's difficulties, many general classification contenders made their move, but the Frenchman managed to return to the group thanks to the great work of his Total Energies teammates. About 4 km from the finish, Aaron Gate and Alvaras Mikutis launched the decisive attack and quickly moved to the head of the race.
With an attack in the final meters, Aaron Gate beat the Tudor athlete in a sprint and delivered the fourth success for the XDS Astana team at the Tour de Langkawi. Once again, good performances from the Italians, with Enrico Zanoncello (VF Group Bardiani) claiming fifth place and Davide Bais (Polti Visit Malta) eighth.
Joris Delbove managed to defend his advantage accumulated during the queen stage at Fraser's Hill and won the overall classification of the Tour de Langkawi. "I'm really happy to have managed to defend the leader's jersey," Delbove told tuttobiciweb, "I wasn't feeling great last night and during the race I wasn't at my best. In fact, I dropped on the last climb. My teammates were truly incredible because they worked hard to bring me back to the group. I spent all my energy, but I knew I couldn't give up. Now I'm extremely happy and want to enjoy this victory."
Nicolas Vinokourov won the best Asian athlete classification, Erlend Blikra the points classification, and Patrick Eddy the mountain classification.
