André Greipel is no longer the Head Coach of the German national team: the 42-year-old former professional from Rostock, winner of seven Giro d'Italia stages and 151 other races in his career, leaves the position he has held since 2023. This was announced by the Bund Deutscher Radfahrer (German Cycling Federation).
The former German sprinter, who guided John Degenkolb to eighth place in the 2023 European Championships from the team car, explained that he can no longer continue in the role due to lack of time, and then thanked the directors of the German cycling federation.
Jens Zemke has been recalled to replace Greipel, the German selector until 2022, who - as reported in the statement - will be able to carry out the tasks of Head Coach while maintaining his role in the Q36.5 staff.
"I am happy to help the federation, I made myself available even with little notice. I know the riders and how the federation is structured. I am confident that we can build a strong national team for the upcoming World Championships and European Championships," said the 58-year-old coach from Wiesbaden.
Marcus Burghardt, vice president of the body governing German cycling, commented: "We worked excellently with André Greipel over the past two years and we regret that he is leaving the position; with Jens Zemke we are regaining a true expert in the field, I have known him for a long time and I am well aware of the quality of his work."
