From March 6-9, 2027, Gran Canaria will host the second edition of CycleSummit Sport, the international B2B event dedicated to professionals in sports cycling tourism, with particular focus on road cycling, mountain biking, and gravel biking.
The event will bring international tour operators, incoming operators, and professionals specialized in organizing and marketing bicycle travel to the island, offering Gran Canaria an important opportunity to consolidate its position among Europe's leading destinations for active and sports tourism.
The official announcement was made during CycleSummit Classic, held from October 3-6 in Groningen, the Netherlands, where Turismo de Gran Canaria presented the destination and the upcoming Sport edition to the international audience of participants.
Founded in 2009, CycleSummit Classic has progressively established itself as an international platform for cycle tourism professionals to meet, bringing together approximately 200 professionals from numerous countries each year.
The 17th edition, just concluded in Groningen, confirmed the international dimension of the event, with particularly significant participation from Italian tour operators, who formed the largest national delegation with approximately 30 representatives, alongside operators from France, Germany, Britain, Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, Spain, and the United States.
The success of CycleSummit lies in a format that combines B2B workshops, scheduled individual meetings, networking, and on-site activities. A model that enables operators to develop new business collaborations while simultaneously experiencing firsthand the characteristics and tourism offerings of host destinations.
The growing specialization of the market led in 2026 to the creation of CycleSummit Sport, an event specifically dedicated to sports cycling, which debuted from March 7-10 in Oudenaarde, in the Belgian Flanders, in the heart of one of Europe's most iconic cycling territories.
After the first edition, the torch now passes to Gran Canaria, which will offer participants a completely different setting, characterized by mild temperatures, volcanic landscapes, significant elevation gains, and the opportunity to cycle year-round.
"We can't wait to experience four intense days on an island where you can cycle all year long," says Heiko Riekenberg, founder of CycleSummit. "Gran Canaria is the ideal venue for the second edition of CycleSummit Sport, which brings together tour operators specializing in road bike, gravel, and mountain bike travel. Here they will have the opportunity to discover a remarkable destination in the saddle and, thanks to the proven CycleSummit format, meet, exchange ideas, and develop new business opportunities, directly buying and selling their tourism products."
The choice of Gran Canaria is no accident. The island has long been an appreciated destination for European cyclists, both professionals and amateurs, especially during the winter months, thanks to favorable climate conditions and an extraordinary variety of routes.
From coastal roads to climbs that traverse the mountainous interior, Gran Canaria offers itineraries suited to different fitness levels, with technical routes, hairpin turns, spectacular views, and challenging elevation gains. Places like Pico de las Nieves, reachable through various climbs, are now well-known to road cycling enthusiasts.
Alongside road cycling, the island offers numerous opportunities for mountain biking and gravel biking, through landscapes ranging from the arid zones of the south to the pine forests and mountainous areas of the interior.
Completing the offering is a network of accommodations attentive to cyclists' needs, rental services, specialized guides and local operators, plus a calendar of sporting events that includes Gran Canaria Bike Week, EPIC Gran Canaria, 360° The Challenge, Challenge Mogán Gran Canaria, and Transgrancanaria Bike.
CycleSummit Sport 2027 will not only be an opportunity to present the island's sports characteristics, but above all a tool for tourism promotion and commercialization.
The format includes professional meetings between tour operators, discussions on industry trends, and cycling activities that will allow participants to directly experience some of the routes and services offered by the destination.
Direct contact with the territory represents one of the distinctive elements of the initiative: operators will be able to evaluate Gran Canaria's potential for developing new itineraries and products to subsequently offer their clients.
The event will also help strengthen relationships with the main European markets for cycle tourism and open new opportunities toward long-haul markets, particularly the North American market, through specialized operators who already commercialize sports travel in Europe.
For Turismo de Gran Canaria, hosting CycleSummit Sport means investing in a strategic segment, capable of enhancing the island's natural characteristics, promoting diversification of tourism offerings, and strengthening the destination's presence in international operators' catalogs.
The goal is to transform direct knowledge of the territory into new collaboration and commercialization opportunities, consolidating Gran Canaria's image as a destination for cycling and active tourism 365 days a year.
