The fifth and final day of competition at the Shanghai velodrome concludes without medals for Italy, as the 2026 track cycling world championships came to an end. The best Italian result of the day was the fifth-place finish by the Consonni-Galli pairing in the men's madison.
The Italian delegation returns home from China with 4 medals: Jonathan Milan's gold and Filippo Ganna's bronze in the individual pursuit, plus two silvers from the team pursuit quartets.
MEN'S SPRINT. The king remains Harrie Lavreysen, who claimed his eighth consecutive world title in the discipline. In the final, he defeated Australian Leigh Hoffman, while Japanese Kaiya Oka took bronze, beating Trinidad and Tobago's Nicholas Paul.
WOMEN'S KEIRIN. Miriam Vece failed to make an impact and her world championships ended disappointingly in the repechage rounds. The world title went to Alina Lisenko (AIN) in a photo finish ahead of Germany's Lea Sophie Friedrich and Britain's Emma Finucane.
WOMEN'S POINTS RACE. A tightly contested race saw Ireland's Lara Gillespie take victory ahead of Denmark's Amelie Dideriksen, with Belgium's Shari Bossuyt in third place. All other competitors finished far back, including Rachele Barbieri, who closed in twelfth position.
MEN'S ELIMINATION. Germany's Tim Torn Teutenberg claimed his first world podium in this discipline, edging out Denmark's Tobias Hansen and Belgium's Jules Hesters. Italian Matteo Fiorin had terrible luck in his world championships debut, becoming involved in a crash. He attempted to continue but was forced to retire, finishing in fifteenth place.
MEN'S MADISON. Denmark's Carl-Frederik Bevort and Lasse Norman Leth absolutely dominated the world competition, gaining three full laps and demonstrating clear superiority. Silver went to Portugal's Iuri Leitao and Ivo Oliveira, while Belgium's Lindsay Van Vylder and Fabio van den Bossche took bronze. Italy's Simone Consonni and Nicolò Galli finished fifth with 40 points: the Italians made a strong start, then expended considerable energy in a fruitless mid-race attempt but managed to gain a good lap in the slipstream of Denmark. In the final stages, they tried to rejoin the medal battle, but their energy reserves were already depleted.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS OVERVIEW. Great Britain claimed six titles and confirmed its position as the world leader, despite dealing with the case of sprinter Matthew Richardson, who was excluded from the team on the eve of competition for disciplinary reasons. The Netherlands also confirmed its strength, while Germany and especially France appeared below their usual standards despite their medal hauls.
Australia and New Zealand began their journey toward Los Angeles 2028 at a rather slow pace, while important signals came from China, particularly in women's sprint, and from Japan, whose athletes are showing clear growth.
