The pursuit of maximum safety is being advanced on the track as well, and in Shanghai, during these Worlds, a new solution is being tested to ensure that riders do not pedal in the blue band, which is considered a rest zone.
Instead of traditional foam cylinders, which risked becoming dangerous particularly in team events, pursuit and team sprint, actual deterrents have been positioned that resemble, in miniature, those we are accustomed to seeing on our roads. It is a sort of rubber mat measuring 40x50 centimeters, which covers two closely spaced bumps. In this way, even if struck, the deterrent remains fixed on the track and slows down the rider without causing a fall, whereas the cylinder risked—when struck—jumping up and ending up between the wheels of the following rider.
A simple solution that in the first days of racing has proven to be effective: we await the end of the world championship to understand what the UCI's evaluation will be and whether it will be decided to adopt them permanently.
