In the 2027 Giro d'Italia there will be a stage with double crossing of the Mortirolo, tackled from the steepest side, and the Passo Gavia as the Cima Coppi. This is revealed by Alessandro Brambilla in Tuttosport on newsstands today, Tuesday, October 13. The Giro d'Italia will take place from May 8 to 30 with the start in Trieste and the finish in Rome. The Giro Rosa will be officially presented on November 3 in Rome, however Brambilla is already providing numerous previews. The Giro will begin with a Trieste-Trieste stage including sections of Slovenia. This will be followed by Gorizia – Pordenone, then the Giro will head south. According to Tuttosport, the first shock to the general classification will come from the time trial Sulmona-Campo di Giove (Gran Sasso d'Italia area) with an uphill finish. A stage finish in Naples is also planned, a city that has always been faithful to the Giro. The stage will not end in Piazza Plebiscito, as it did in 2026, but rather on Viale Caracciolo, by the sea, near the America's Cup events.
The Giro will then climb back up the peninsula. There will be a stage starting from Castiglione del Lago, in Umbria, and finishing at the Mugello Autodrome. On the track so dear to Valentino Rossi, Francesco Bagnaia and Marco Bezzecchi, a battle between sprinters is planned. On Friday, May 21, the stage will be Montecatini-Reggio Emilia. "The real Giro d'Italia, the one in which champions cannot afford to make mistakes – specifies Brambilla – will begin on Saturday, May 22 in Lombardy".
It is the day of the stage starting from Cantù and finishing at Piani di Bobbio, a ski resort in the province of Lecco. Piani di Bobbio (elevation 1662 meters) is between Valsassina and Val Brembana: the finish line will be reached from Valtorta, the Bergamo side. Naturally, before the final climb there will be other ascents. Tuttosport defines the 2027 Giro Rosa as the "Giro of the great racetracks". Indeed, on Sunday, May 23, there will be an individual time trial starting and finishing on the historic track of the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza. The Autodromo management company will be in charge of this. Alessandro Brambilla writes that "if they participate, Remco Evenepoel and Filippo Ganna will try to emulate Kimi Antonelli".
After the rest day, the killer stage is scheduled. The Sondrio-Aprica on Tuesday, May 25 will have almost 6000 meters of elevation gain. First, the Mortirolo (elevation 1852 meters) will be tackled from the steepest side, with the climb starting at Mazzo Valtellina. After descending towards Val Camonica, the riders will face the Passo Gavia (2618 meters). Then they will descend to Bormio and then climb the Mortirolo again from Mazzo. Following this, they will plunge towards Edolo, and climb with passage through Corteno Golgi and finish in Aprica.
On Wednesday, May 26, the Giro will restart from Chiari (Lower Brescia) to reach Negrar, a town in Valpolicella known to cycling enthusiasts for the Palio del Recioto Under 23. On Thursday, May 27, starting from Valpolicella, the route will reach Madonna di Campiglio (1550 meters), and this will bring back many memories linked especially to Marco Pantani's story. The next day's stage will start from Trentino and end in Austria. On Saturday, May 29, the stage will start from Lienz, a town in the Austrian Tyrol closely linked to the Tour of the Alps and Giro d'Italia, and will finish on the mythical and extremely steep Monte Zoncolan. As Tuttosport recalls, there was the Lienz-Zoncolan in 2007 with the victory of Gilberto Simoni. Another Lienz-Zoncolan was held in the 2011 Giro; Igor Anton won. At the 1750 meters of Zoncolan, the final winner will be crowned. For him, a great parade the next day in the final stage in Rome. The stage will end at the Imperial Forums or in any case near the Colosseum. In 2026 in Rome, Jonathan Milan won the stage and there were great celebrations in honor of Jonas Vingegaard, the final winner of the Giro.
