It had been talked about for weeks now, but the news is now official: starting next season Filippo Ganna will defend the colors of Lidl Trek. The Piedmontese rider has signed a three-year contract with the German team where, among others, he will reunite with his national team teammates Jonathan Milan and Simone Consonni.
The two-time world time trial champion and Olympic gold medalist is ready to strengthen Lidl-Trek's ambitions in the Classics, Grand Tours, and time trials over the next three years.
The thirty-year-old Piedmontese rider has been a two-time world time trial champion and excels in races against the clock. His road palmares includes eight stage wins at the Giro d'Italia, two at the Vuelta a España, and five at Tirreno-Adriatico. With extraordinary power and versatility, the Italian has also played a key role in some of the most important Classics: he has finished on the podium twice at Milano-Sanremo and in 2026 won a dramatic edition of Dwars door Vlaanderen, demonstrating his ability to transform his time trial skills into success on every type of terrain.
Ganna's track palmares is equally impressive: he was part of the Italian team that won the Olympic gold medal in team pursuit at Tokyo and has won numerous world titles in the discipline, in addition to being the current holder of the UCI men's hour record.
Speaking about his choice to join Lidl-Trek ahead of an ambitious 2027 season, Ganna commented: “I can't wait to start next year with such an important team as Lidl-Trek. I am extremely proud to be part of it and I look forward to the first training camp and starting the season in the best possible way. After eight years with my current team, opening a new chapter is fantastic and I feel very motivated for the new season. I have great objectives that I hope to achieve with Lidl-Trek, especially in the Classics: with the team we will have, nothing is impossible. Of course, the Grand Tours remain an important objective and I can't wait to support the team and showcase myself.”
The Italian rider already knows many of his future teammates, having achieved success with the Italian national team alongside Jonathan Milan and Simone Consonni.
“I know Simo and Jonny from when we raced together on the track. With Simo it's nice to be on the same team again after so many years. With Jonny it will be fantastic to work with him because he's a really wonderful person. I also train with Matteo Sobrero, he motivates me a lot during the toughest moments. Mads is the number one of the team and I hope to be a good point of reference for him, and vice versa, I know he will be an excellent supporter for me.”
Ganna's arrival adds a further dimension to an already strong Lidl-Trek team, bringing with it proven experience and success at the highest levels. Thanks to his ability to be effective in time trials, to set the pace on the most demanding roads, and to compete for victory, Ganna represents an additional resource for Lidl-Trek, which continues to grow and is able to achieve various objectives.
Lidl-Trek CEO Andy Schleck commented: “Filippo is an exceptional talent and a rider who has consistently demonstrated his value at the highest levels of our sport. His achievements speak for themselves, but what really excites us is the range of opportunities he brings to the team. From time trials to the Classics, to the Grand Tours, there are very few riders in the peloton with his combination of power, experience, and versatility. We believe Filippo still has much to achieve in his career and we want to offer him the environment and support necessary to continue pushing his limits. He is a rider who can win some of the most important races in the world, but also make a difference for the success of his teammates. We have a clear plan for the future and Filippo is fundamental to turning it into reality. We can't wait to discover what we can achieve together.”
