The hunt begins for the successor to Tadej Pogacar who, after five consecutive triumphs, was knocked out by a crash at the recent Vuelta a España. Among the great favorites are two of his teammates: Brandon McNulty, who conquered the world road title in Montreal, and Isaac Del Toro, who last year made his debut in the Classic of the Dead Leaves with a promising fifth place.

Who has performed better in the recent past is Remco Evenepoel, second in both 2024 and 2025, and captain of a very ambitious Red Bull - Bora - Hansgrohe with Primoz Roglic, fresh from the European time trial title, in the role of second leader.
Worth following closely is British rider Tom Pidcock, MTB world champion and sixth on his debut in 2025, Italian Giulio Ciccone, European vice-champion and third in Il Lombardia 2024, and French talent Paul Seixas, who placed seventh last year.

Also at the start Bauke Mollema, winner in 2019 and competing in his final race of his career.
THE ROUTE OF IL LOMBARDIA PRESENTED BY CRÉDIT AGRICOLE
Departure from Bergamo heading towards Val Seriana for a short flat section before tackling a series of climbs in the Prealps around the city. The climbs of Colle dei Pasta (Bocche di Gavarno as the descent point) and the climb of Selvino with its hairpin turns, Colle di Berbenno and Valpiana which concludes the first series of climbs are linked together. A section of upper Brianza is crossed tackling the "Giovenzana" side of Colle Brianza to descend rapidly to Lecco. The Lake Como area is entered and climbed from Lecco to reach Bellagio where the classic climb of Ghisallo begins. A climb with gradients up to 14% on wide road with several hairpin turns. The descent, very fast, takes place along long straights and ends at Maglio to continue in slight descent until reaching Como where the race will cover a final circuit of 22 km. The town of Como is passed to tackle San Fermo della Battaglia (m 397) for the first time, descend to Como and pass through the finish line. About a kilometer later, the hard climb towards Civiglio (614 m) is tackled with gradients practically always around 10% (note a marked narrowing of the road at the top of the climb) to descend and crossing Como again to climb San Fermo della Battaglia for the second time.
The final 10 km begin within the town of Como, following wide avenues until the railway underpass where the final climb of San Fermo della Battaglia begins. The gradient is around 7% (max 10%) with narrow road and rough road surface. Several hairpin turns are passed until the descent point which occurs around 5 km from the finish. The descent on wide road, well paved, encounters two well-lit tunnels and two large roundabouts, ending at the last kilometer. At 600 m from the finish, the last wide left turn.
