Today Alejandro Valverde, technical director of the Spanish national cycling team, officially announced the roster that will compete in the upcoming Road World Championships, scheduled to take place in Canada. With the Vuelta concluding just one week prior, Valverde has selected eight riders he believes are capable of fighting for a podium finish at the worlds.

The squad announcement took place in Seville, where Valverde confirmed the following athletes: Juan Ayuso, Carlos Verona, Enric Mas, Raúl García Pierna, Iván Romeo, Marcel Camprubí, Igor Arrieta and Markel Beloki. This selection represents a mix of experienced men and young talents, capable of tackling a race that promises to be far less controllable than recent World Championship editions.

Valverde expressed great confidence in his squad, believing that the race dynamics could favor the Spanish riders. He stated: "This is a very open World Championship; the race dynamics are much more fluid", emphasizing how the chosen course plays to the team's strengths.

Regarding the selection, he added: "We have a group that combines experience and freshness. Each rider has his own strengths and I am confident they will be able to express their full potential."

Among the riders, Juan Ayuso emerges as a key figure. However, the team will not necessarily be built around a single leader. Valverde highlighted the presence of Enric Mas, currently in contention for the Vuelta title, as an additional strategic option for the most demanding phases of the race. "Mas is in excellent form and could prove decisive in critical moments", the coach declared.

The short timeframe between the Vuelta and the Worlds will require careful management of the riders' physical condition. The preparation of athletes like Mas and García Pierna will be crucial, as they will need to recover quickly after the demands of the Spanish grand tour. Valverde clarified that, barring injuries, these will be the eight men representing Spain: "We have confidence in these riders and we are ready to give our best."
