Tadej Pogacar, the Slovenian cycling phenomenon, has had a career filled with successes, but also with falls. His recent withdrawal from the Vuelta a España due to a crash in the bunch has refocused attention on his falling experiences. Here is a list of the seven most significant ones in his career, ordered by date.
1 Tour de France 2022
During the eighteenth stage of the Tour de France 2022, finishing at Hautacam in the Pyrenees, Pogacar crashes on the descent of Col des Spandelles and then gets back up. This episode is known for the fair play of Vingegaard, wearing the yellow jersey, who waited for the Slovenian champion, setting an example of sportsmanship at a critical moment: the two champions then shake hands. Despite the incident, Pogacar continues to battle with the Dane and arrives in Paris second behind him.
2 Liège-Bastogne-Liège 2023
In the Liège-Bastogne-Liège 2023, on the descent, approximately 90 km from the finish, Pogacar loses control of his bike, crashes, violently hits his right wrist and fractures his scaphoid. This injury affects his preparation for the Tour de France, where once again he finishes second, beaten by Jonas Vingegaard.
3 Tour de France 2023
During the first part of the nineteenth stage of the Tour de France 2023, Pogacar is involved in a minor crash. Although he suffered no serious consequences, this incident demonstrates that even the most experienced cyclists can find themselves in difficulty.
4 Strade Bianche 2025
During the 2025 Strade Bianche, Pogacar crashes while in a breakaway with Tom Pidcock. He slides on a grass verge, avoids a car, and gets back up. The scene is unexpected and surprises the crowd. However, the Slovenian sets off in pursuit of Pidcock, drops him, and wins solo for the third time the gravel classic, demonstrating his determination.
5 Tour de France 2025
Another significant crash occurs during the eleventh stage of the Tour de France 2025, approximately 5 kilometers from the finish. Pogacar hits the ground due to contact with an opponent's wheel and gets back up without consequences. This incident highlights the fragility of his physical condition at a crucial moment in the competition.
6 Milan-San Remo 2026
In 2026, Pogacar crashes during Milan-San Remo 30 km from the finish on the Aurelia before the Cipressa, but thanks to adrenaline and his teammates' work he manages to recover quickly. On Via Roma he beats Pidcock in the sprint and conquers the Spring Classic.
7. Vuelta a España 2026
Finally, the most recent incident at the 2026 Vuelta a España. 32 km from the finish of the eighth stage, Pogacar crashes on a flat section, perhaps due to a distraction while drinking or an object on the asphalt. The result is dramatic: concussion, displaced fracture of the left clavicle and a stable fracture of the cervical vertebra C7. The world champion withdraws and gets into the ambulance.
Tadej Pogacar's falls tell not only of the physical challenges faced by a high-level athlete, but also of his resilience and determination. Each incident has represented an obstacle, but the Slovenian champion has always demonstrated the ability to get back up and continue to compete. His career, though marked by these difficulties, is an example of perseverance in the world of cycling.
