Just a few months after joining the team, Colombian Fernando Gaviria (La Ceja, 1994) and Caja Rural-Seguros RGA have agreed to extend their collaboration for another season, thus formalizing the solid relationship between the two parties and the positive impact that the experienced sprinter has had on the Spanish team, both through his race performances and thanks to the wealth of experience he brings to a young squad.
Although he has not yet secured a victory, Gaviria has demonstrated competitiveness and presence across a wide range of races, competing against some of the world's best sprinters. The Antioquia rider achieved a second-place finish in the Belgian classic Ronde van Limburg, in a stage of the Tour of Oman and in a stage of the Tour de Hongrie; a third-place finish in another stage of the Hungarian race; and a fifth-place finish at the Pan-American Championships and in stages in Turkey and, once again, in Hungary. This impressive series of top-five finishes reflects the consistency demonstrated by the Colombian across the various races he has participated in during his first months with Caja Rural-Seguros RGA.
Gaviria was also one of the team's standout riders on his Tour de France debut, where misfortune prevented him from adding another excellent result to that long list. The South American rider was forced to withdraw at the end of the twelfth stage following a crash in the group sprint at Chalon-sur-Saône, while he was in a good position in the final meters. The crash caused him a fractured collarbone, from which he is now recovering, with the goal of returning to racing in the latter part of the season.
