Jonas Vingegaard, the Danish champion of Team Visma | Lease a Bike, has announced that he will no longer participate in races for the remainder of the 2026 season. The decision, already foreseeable, comes after the collarbone fracture he suffered during the Tour de France, an injury that has hindered his ability to compete at the highest levels.
The Danish rider wants to focus on recovery and then look to the future, with the intention of arriving at 2027 in great shape and being competitive at the highest level to challenge Tadej Pogacar.
Vingegaard, already winner of a Giro d'Italia, two Tours de France and a Vuelta, has had a remarkable season, winning Paris-Nice, the Volta a Catalunya and, of course, the Giro d'Italia at his first participation. However, the need for adequate recovery has led the cyclist to concentrate his efforts on rehabilitation rather than on new competitive objectives.
In a statement, Vingegaard said: "After a long and intense period of racing, a recovery period was planned anyway after the Tour de France. Due to the collarbone fracture, the start of my training was postponed and it won't be possible for me to return to peak form in the coming period. The goal is to prepare myself as best as possible for the 2027 season. I will discuss these specific objectives with the team in the coming weeks."
For the same reasons, we won't see Vingegaard wearing the Danish national team jersey at the upcoming World Championships. Marc Reef, team manager of Team Visma, also commented on the situation, stating: "As announced at the beginning of the season, after the Tour de France we would take stock of the remainder of the season. After an intense period with many racing days and the collarbone fracture suffered by Jonas, it's better that he focuses on 2027. Together with Jonas, in the coming weeks we will define the training program and objectives for the new year."
Vingegaard's decision not to compete further in 2026 highlights the growing awareness among athletes regarding the importance of recovery and long-term preparation. With the hope of returning to form for the 2027 season, fans and cycling enthusiasts await his return to competition with great anticipation.
Jonas Vingegaard's choice, although difficult, reflects a strategic approach aimed at ensuring a complete recovery before facing new challenges. In the meantime, all cycling enthusiasts hope to see him back in the saddle soon, ready to achieve new milestones.
