Hosting the Grand Départ of the Tour de France to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall: Germany is dreaming of a major event and has officially submitted its candidacy for the 2029 edition of the Grande Boucle.

The German Cycling Federation has delivered the candidacy dossier, along with a fragment of the Berlin Wall, to the General Director of A.S.O., Yann Le Moënner, and to the Tour Director, Christian Prudhomme, in the presence of high-ranking representatives from the political, sporting, economic and diplomatic worlds.

The objective is to bring the world's most important cycling race to Berlin and central Germany in 2029, 40 years after the Peaceful Revolution and the fall of the Wall. The candidacy is supported by the German federal government and the Länder of Berlin, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

"The candidacy presented is undoubtedly extremely interesting. We will examine it with the utmost attention, even though we already had some preliminary information about it. This is an extremely valid project," Prudhomme declared at the Brandenburg Gate.

And he added: "The Tour de France has always found its home where history is made, real history, great history. If the Tour were to actually start from Berlin in 2029, it would become part of that very history. As you know, every year we receive many candidacies, but this one is closely linked to the historic anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. This symbolic connection cannot simply be postponed to a later date: I sincerely hope that we can collaborate on this project and make a dream that we share come true".
