France has found its new phenomenon and from Saturday onwards it will see him compete on the most prestigious stage of professional cycling. At just 19 years old, Paul Seixas arrives at his first Tour de France with the weight of an entire nation's expectations on his shoulders, but also with the maturity of someone who already seems to have a clear vision of his own path.
Yesterday in Barcelona, the Decathlon-CMA CGM talent experienced one of the first truly special moments of his very young career. For the first time, he was invited to the press conference reserved for the great favorites of the Grande Boucle, sitting alongside established champions such as Mathieu Van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen. A clear signal: the Tour already considers Seixas one of its protagonists.
When the organizers announced Paul Seixas's entry into the room, an almost surreal silence fell. Everyone was waiting for the nineteen-year-old who has been setting French cycling ablaze for months and whom many point to as the natural heir to the great French champions.
With surprising naturalness, alternating between French and English, Seixas answered journalists' questions with calm, without letting himself be overwhelmed by emotion.
But when he looked up toward the stage reserved for the Tour's leaders, he admitted that something was changing. «It's definitely special to be here. I knew the Tour would be on another level, and now I have confirmation. It's a new experience that's beginning for me and I hope it will be positive».
Measured words that perfectly capture the moment the young Frenchman is living: the dream he has pursued since childhood has finally become reality.
Despite the clamor surrounding him, Seixas continues to keep his feet firmly on the ground. «I approach this race like any other, with maximum seriousness and concentration. It's the Tour and it's a dream I've cultivated since childhood, but I remain focused».
Phrases that capture the character of a young man capable of managing enormous pressure without losing clarity. The Tour de France, however, represents something completely different from everything he has experienced so far.
«I've already won races, but this is something else. Before I can say I want to win the Tour, I first need to gain experience here».
Despite his young age, Seixas doesn't hide his ambitions. The main objective will be the general classification, without getting distracted by the hunt for stage victories.
«The priority remains tackling the general classification as best as possible. Where I'll be able to finish, I don't know yet—we'll discover that along the way. But I won't take unnecessary risks that could compromise my Tour».
A choice that confirms how Decathlon-CMA CGM strongly believes in his qualities as a Grand Tour rider. During the press conference, an inevitable comparison also came up with another phenomenon of the new generation: Lamine Yamal, the Spanish football talent who, at just 18 years old, has already conquered the world.
When asked if he shared the same hunger for victories, Seixas smiled.
«Of course you always want to win. But this is the Tour de France. It's a new experience and first of all I need to understand my level in a race like this».
Once again, enthusiasm and caution coexist perfectly in his words. His absolute debut will come Saturday with the 19.6-kilometer team time trial on the roads of Barcelona. Decathlon-CMA CGM has already tested the course on Thursday morning and Seixas said he was confident.
«I think we have a very solid team. We've already done the first reconnaissance runs and it went very well. It will be a particular test, very fast but with two final climbs that could make the difference».
Seixas is the youngest among the riders aiming for the general classification and also one of the great favorites for the white jersey. But more than the classifications, what strikes you is the naturalness with which he is living a moment that could have crushed any nineteen-year-old.
France has been waiting for 41 years for a rider capable of bringing the country back to the top of the Tour de France. It's still too early to say whether Paul Seixas will truly be able to collect that legacy, but one thing is already certain: the young man who took the stage with the greats today has definitively stopped being merely a promise.
From Saturday his first Tour de France will begin and it will be the start of a story that French cycling hopes to tell for many years to come.
